The National Junior Squash Championship is an annual championship held by the UAE Squash Association. Players across UAE and abroad are invited to play in the most prestigious squash tournament of the year.
The competition took place on 21st May, 2022, concluded in twelve hours, and saw some of the world’s best players coming from various countries like Egypt, the United Kingdom and Russia. There were categories for all age groups; from Under-9 to the senior divisions for adults. I personally played in the Under-15 and Under-17 categories and won the gold and bronze medals respectively.
My team mate was Ansh Oberoi of 10H who played in the finals with me. Unfortunately, during the last game, he had a severe muscle pull and had difficulty in walking. Despite the incredible pain he was in, Ansh’s utter willpower pushed him to play and fight till the end. He is an excellent example of the true spirit of a sportsperson – never giving up irrespective of the circumstances.
The president of the UAE Squash Association, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Mubarak Al-Mutaiwee graced the award ceremony. In all, the tournament was a rollercoaster of emotions and will remain a day I will never forget.
