This is a really unique attempt by the Grade 10 Drama students, with only three to four hours of rehearsal, without a tangible script; along with 3 student directors and one teacher director. The characters included four Nora’s, two Torvald’s and one omniscient gossipy narrator that unifies the entire play. There were three different theatrical styles all aimed at telling a story written in 1879 set in Norway, which focuses on the married life of banker Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora. A young middle-class couple with three small children, their seemingly respectable marriage is revealed to be a broken and bloodless matter.

All three scenes were directed separately and then brought together to establish unity of time, action and space. The narrator is meant to be the spirit of the age, flitting in and out of scenes undetected.

The talented cast included Amy Antony, Prisha Malhotra, Aarshati Chavan, Nikita Sachdeva, Aggy Dominic, Marc Thomson, Rashi Karnik and Kripa Kotriwala. The lights and sound were handled dexterously by Rishit Goswami and Eryn Lewis. The assistant directors were Pahal Samyani, Shreya Nautiyal and Verushka Ved. Mr. Sheldon Dias was our overall director and made sure the production ran smoothly.

Since we worked in three separate groups, it wasn’t as hectic of a production process. However, a lot of aspects like costume, stage set, lights and sound were last minute. The whole team came together and put on three exquisite shows.

This is A Doll’s House.
