The lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam hold a valuable place in Indian history – to say the least. Their lives are worth commemorating and celebrating.
Our students, Aryan Kundra and Anoushcka Bhat did that and a lot more, at the 22nd Annual Inter school Debate Competition hosted by the Consulate General of India.
The competition, held a day after Gandhi Jayanti, saw 88 eloquent speakers from 44 schools across the UAE participate. The theme of the competition was ‘Igniting Minds’, based on the philosophy and ideals of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The two motions given were “Political Engagement Should be Necessary to Ignite Young Minds” and “We are Citizens of the World, Not our Countries”. Aryan Kundra spoke against the need of involving young people in politics, explaining why things like Political Polarization create a toxic environment for young people. The witty remarks of our students were well received by the audience and judges. This led to Aryan winning the Best Speaker award. He was also felicitated separately at a function during Expo 2020 on the 15th of October. He and Anoushcka together brought home the Overall Rolling Trophy, an award that has been evading the aisles of GEMS Modern Academy for years.
