GIRL UP. What is it? It is an organization created by a group of women, for women, at the United Nations (UN) in 2010, which aims at encouraging privileged women and members of society to raise awareness and funds for women living in underdeveloped nations, where they lack rights and resources to fend for themselves.
Recently, two determined students, Anoushka and Nida of grade 12 presented their proposal to Mrs. Khambatta, our principal, that we start a localized version of this club. Mrs. Khambatta, who is not only our principal but also the Vice President of the Gems Education Group, is a strong pillar of support for this cause, as she believes more women should be on the forefront in a patriarchal society, such as ours. With her approval, Girl Up GMA became a reality.
There are a number or articles and podcasts on the Instagram page, going into great detail with regards to issues women face and providing comprehensive solutions for the same. They have encouraged donations for women in third world countries facing immense difficulties, especially during the trying times of Covid-19.
Through our venture, we are spreading awareness, and simultaneously highlighting the various issues that are dominant in society and to help people understand and realize the prevalent issues we subconsciously and consciously have instilled within ourselves. Reading these articles have brought about new perspectives in the minds of many, and have inspired many young girls to reach their potential, regardless of their gender.
Our key priority is educating the children of today in these matters, as children might be only 40% of the world’s population today, but we are the 100% of tomorrow’s leaders.
