‘The Secret Garden‘ by Frances Hodgson Burnett is about Mary Lennox, the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. She was an extremely spoilt child who was left alone in her father’s bungalow after a cholera epidemic killed her parents and servants.
‘The Secret Garden‘ highlights the curative power of nature. The story revolves around the beauty of nature and how spending time outdoors can improve one’s attitude, behaviour and temperament. Colin was a sick boy, confined to a wheelchair while Mary was a spoilt, vinegar-tempered child. While working on restoring the Secret Garden, they were also unknowingly reshaping themselves. They were transformed into youthful and happy children. Colin was able to walk again while Mary had completely changed into a joyful friend.
Through this book, the author is trying to convey the message that friendships are essential and can help to improve one’s behavior and temperament. Interacting with nature and exploring the world outside can make us happier and healthier. You must read this book because it proves that interacting with Mother Nature and exploring the great outdoors can transform us into better versions of ourselves.
