Our oceans have never been more threatened. The great challenges of overfishing, climate change, pollution and habitat loss have taken a terrible toll, jeopardizing vital fish stocks and the lives and livelihoods of the hundreds of millions who depend on them. Along with this, global warming is causing sea levels to rise, threatening coastal population centers. Many pesticides and nutrients used in agriculture end up in the coastal waters, resulting in oxygen depletion that kills marine plants and shellfish. Factories and industrial plants discharge sewage and other runoff into the oceans.

What can we do to protect life below water?

  • Use fewer plastic products.
  • Keep beaches clean.
  • Support campaigns which promote SDG14.
  • Do not pollute the oceans/reduce waste.
  • Fish responsibly.
  • Practice safe boating.
