It’s hard to believe that our beloved school is 35 years old. Anyone who has been in this school for a few years knows the significance of Modern’s birthday. We know how hard all the people who built this school from the ground up worked, and in order to acknowledge all their hard work, blood, sweat and tears, we celebrate Modern’s birthday. Let me tell you about some of the celebrations that occurred on Modern’s birthday.
The celebrations started at 8:00 am when we watched a special assembly. No one knew what was going on, and to be completely honest, we were all shocked when we saw alumni from our school performing for us. The choir (of old and current students) sang their hearts out to show their appreciation for Modern. One of the alumni even performed a duet with one of our very talented seniors. We also had the school song play while all of us stood with the utmost respect and appreciation for Modern. Not only does this song represent Modern but it also represents our school lives and the hours of dedication put in by all the staff and students on a daily basis.
Later in the day, we had ice cream trucks in a few areas of the school that sold delicious ice cream. There were also popcorn machines and a few other food trucks. We were given a free period during our last class of the day, and allowed to go play any sport we wanted with our friends. This gave us a sense of relaxation and joy as I’m pretty sure many students prefer playing outside with their friends to being in a classroom talking about the stress of upcoming exams. There was also kite flying, which was super fun!
This day consisted of laughter and perhaps a few tears as everyone began to think how fast time has flown by. It seemed like only a few years ago that I had entered this school as a young 5-year-old with so much untapped potential, which Modern managed to release and help to blossom in me.
The alumni talked about their experiences as young men and women wanting to have an effect on the world and how Modern managed to provide them with this opportunity. I just want to end by saying that Modern isn’t just a school; it’s a forum where one is allowed to be themselves without fear of rejection, a place where all ideas matter and everyone’s opinion is valued.
Happy Birthday, Modern. We all hope to have a great year ahead!
