Budding artists and art enthusiasts, listen closely! In this edition, you’ll gain insight into the mystery that is an artist’s mind, provided by Ms. Sumedha Goel, a profoundly gifted and introspective artist.
Her philosophy of painting is a beautiful one—it derives from the innate search for inner peace and the belief that art and life rest on thoughtful reflection. She is inspired by the most abundant beauty in our surroundings: colour and nature.
Her current series is mixed-media and abstractionism galore, the inspiration being nature’s own art: flowers. Imagine standing in a forest surrounded by beautiful trees laden with flowers in all imaginable colours. Close your eyes and let the surrounding fragrances, sounds, colours and shapes engulf you and inevitably, you feel yourself being transported to a place where your mind is calm and your heart is happy. That’s what these paintings are about.
Her paintings are composed of acrylic paints, tissue paper, newspaper, oil pastels, watercolours, Conte pencils, graphite, etc., all on the same canvas or paper. When asked why she uses mixed media, Ms. Goel simply replied, “I love mixed media because of the variety of things I can use – first draw with ink, then paint over it with watercolours, then add acrylic paints and over that, some highlights in colour pencils and graphite. It’s super playful, messy and creative, all at the same time.”
The most rewarding part of being an artist for her is bringing new ideas to life by creating something original with her own hands. (Which she does ingeniously!)
For all you readers on your own artistic journey, I am sure you are wondering what Ms. Sumedha’s artistic coming-of-age looked like. In the beginning, like a lot of us, she would paint form references of photographs she took and then realized the importance of technical training. So she sought out the masters and trained under them for 4-5 years!
