“I have been blessed with the best kids in the whole world. Every single one of them makes all the challenges that come with teaching, totally worth it!” – Rahila Sen, Economics Teacher, GMA.
Today’s Educator’s Corner stars one of our favourites, the peppiest and sparkiest – Ms. Rahila Sen.
What a delight it was to interview her!
“I have always loved being around books and learning new things, even though some of my friends/family hated studying with a passion,” she states. One could call her a philomath due to her zest to learn!
“I took up teaching to bridge that gap and make it interesting or at least bearable for people who find academics boring and difficult.” When asked whether she had always dreamt of becoming a teacher, she said that it was the first game she remembered playing as a child. “I’m not going to lie; every other field I had tried in college was frustratingly boring and tedious for me. But teaching was the most rewarding to me in terms of job satisfaction.”
Her absolute favourite subject has always been and will forever be Math. Before starting her career in teaching, she had already made her switch from Science to Commerce. Since Economics had the most Math involved, that’s exactly what she went for! What interested her most was the extent of quantitative, logical reasoning and analytical skills used in the subject.
“As I grew older, I fell in love with the real-world relevance and application of the subject.”
According to her, Economics truly helps you to become more resourceful and a much better decision-maker as well.
As for her inspirations in life, she has always admired the economic policies set by the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Closer to home, she is truly appreciative of the entire department she works with at school. “Mr. Kapil Chaudhary and Ms. Sagarika Banerjee are the best mentors I could have wished for in my entire teaching career.”
We all know what an exuberant dancer Ms. Rahila is! Her Instagram page is filled with some pretty impressive dance covers. She hopes to never take a break from this talent of hers. Other than dancing, she says that her interests change with whatever’s trending around the world, whether it’s makeup or cooking, or even painting!
Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together. And that’s exactly what Ms. Rahila hopes to do with her students. “I have no idea how my students, for the most part at least, are so kind, loving, and mature individuals at such an early stage in their lives. I just hope and pray they keep this part of themselves as they grow older.”
