According to the World Health Organization, “Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization.” In fact, the impact of this deadly disease has been progressing at a high rate for a very long time now, making the awareness of breast cancer even more significant, necessary and relevant as of today. The My Mom and Yours campaign at Modern which started two years ago aims to extend our students’ support to the patients and survivors of breast cancer through emphasis on the importance of testing.
As Modern’s Pinktober celebrations come to an end, students who sign up for our esteemed campaign will take the initiative of convincing at least ten individuals to get tested for Breast Cancer. Upon completion, they will be awarded a certificate that commemorates their valiant efforts. Identifying breast cancer at an early stage reduces the risk of dying from the disease by 25-30% or more. Women should begin having mammograms annually at age 40 and even earlier if they are at high risk. The best way to reduce deaths from this condition as well as spreading awareness in society is by getting routine checks done.
Playing its role as being one of the leading causes of death, this form of cancer has been prevalent both as a disease health-wise and as a disease creating paranoia in minds for the longest time. Often this leads to misinformation and ignorance which further propagates the stigma surrounding Breast Cancer. As mentioned above, Modern dedicates a whole month, amongst regular awareness campaigns, to educate everybody and talk about Breast Cancer with utmost importance given to the topic. Besides being a part of this, we urge you to educate yourself, take steps to ensure everybody in your family gets tested, and thus help break the stigma and shape a well-informed society!
